Orange Park, FL - Orange Park Medical Center has received a 5-star rating for their clinical outcomes in cardiac care, neurosciences, the care of the nervous system and critical care. The ratings are part of a national report release by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. The rating means Orange Park Medical Center's clinical outcomes are significantly better than expected when treating these conditions.
Variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. From 2016-2018, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars, on average, 220,019 lives could potentially have been saved and 149,403 complications could potentially have been avoided.
Healthgrades evaluated hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. "As the largest medical facility in Clay County, treating over 140,000 patients each year, this is a major achievement," said Dr. Steven Goodfriend, Emergency Room Medical Director and Chief of Staff at Orange Park Medical Center.
Orange Park Medical Center is being recognized for these 5-star ratings:
- Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis for 4 Years in a Row
- Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Failure for 4 Years in a Row
- Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Respiratory Failure for 3 Years in a Row
- Five Star Recipient for Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) for 2 Years in a Row
- Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke
- Five Star Treatment of Bowel Obstruction
Sepsis is the bodies overwhelming response to an infection. Each year, sepsis affects more than 26 million people resulting in 270,000 deaths. "To see sepsis on the list year over year is affirmation that our attention to early detection is truly saving lives every day," said Dr. Goodfriend. HCA Healthcare, Orange Park Medical Center's parent company has saved more than 5,500 lives over the past three years as a result of their Stop Severe Sepsis Program (SPOT).
"Consumers have many choices when it comes to choosing a hospital where to receive care and the choice can be a matter of life and death," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. "The hospitals that have been recognized as 5-star rated for specific procedures and conditions stand out above the rest for the ongoing dedication and commitment to providing exceptional care to their patients."
Earlier this year Orange Park Medical Center's women's care received nine 5-star ratings for the fifth year in a row. The awards were part of Healthgrades initiative to empower women to own their healthcare journey and are intended help patients understand a hospital's clinical performance in childbirth, hysterectomies and other gynecologic surgeries, and provide the information needed to make an informed decision on where they seek treatment.
