Family Medicine Residency Curriculum

Entire duration:

  • Family Medicine Center continuity practice
    • PGY-1: 1 afternoon per week, up to 5 visits
    • PGY-2 & 3: Minimum 3 half-days/week, some rotations at 5 and 7 half-days/week
    • Full spectrum of patients in office
    • Federally Qualified Health Center: full range of socioeconomic strata
  • Didactics on all rotations
  • Daily noon lecture series for all residents
    • Journal club
    • Board review
    • Case presentations
    • Specialty lectures
    • Procedure Workshops
    • Two afternoons/month at Mayo Simulation Center for procedural, diagnostic and scenario simulations
  • Board review: lectures, in-training exam each November, actual ABFM exam in April of PGY-3
  • Research project: one in the 3 years of training
  • No overnight call or night float

PGY-1 Rotations

  • Adult inpatient service, 4 months
    • Cap of 6 patients
    • Morning report, teaching rounds, case presentations
  • OB/Labor and Delivery, 2 months
    • OPMC delivers ˜200/month
    • Minimum of 35 deliveries/resident
  • Outpatient Peds in private office, 1 month, expect over 300 encounters
  • General ER, 1 month
  • Peds ER. 2 month
  • Inpatient surgery, 1 month
    • First assist; consults; pre-and post-op rounds
  • Outpatient GYN, 1 month, all phases of women’s health care in office setting

PGY-2 Rotations

  • Adult inpatient service, 2 months
  • ICU, 1 month
  • Outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine, 2 months
  • Inpatient Peds, 1 month
  • Newborn Nursery/NICU, 1 month
  • Elective, 1 month
  • Geriatrics, 1 month: office, nursing home, senior center, geriatric assessment
  • Psychiatry, 1 month, inpatient and outpatient
  • Community medicine, 1 month
    • ½ day in Family Medicine Center every day for continuity
    • Community resources: hospice, visiting nurses, free clinics, social services, county health department
  • Family Medicine Center, 1 month
    • 70% time in office
    • Practice management: do and learn all occupations in clinic
    • Nursing home and house calls with faculty member

PGY-3 Rotaions

  • Adult inpatient service, 2 months, floor chief
  • Electives, 3 months
  • Family Medicine Center, 2 months
  • Community Medicine, 1 month
  • Ophthalmology and Dermatology, 1 month
  • ENT and Urology, 1 month
  • Cardiology, 1month, primarily outpatient
  • Imaging 1 month
