Lung Cancer Treatment

Da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System

Surgeons use the daVinci Robotic Surgical System for a number of procedures including thoracic (chest) surgery for lung cancer. The da Vinci system is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high definition, 3D vision and a magnified view. Our cardiothoracic surgeon controls the machine, which cannot act on its own. The machine translates the surgeon’s movements into smaller, more precise movements to manipulate the tiny instruments used for the surgery, which is performed through much smaller incisions than traditional thoracic surgery.

Our surgical team was the first in North Florida and South Georgia to perform a minimally invasive lung lobectomy with robotic assistance. A lobectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove part of a patient’s lung because of lung cancer.

Potential benefits of lung lobectomy with the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System include:

  • Low cancer recurrence in advanced disease
  • Minimal pain
  • Low blood loss
  • Few complications
  • Fast return of pulmonary function
  • Short hospital stay and fast recovery

Our Heart and Lung Center patients have access to an experienced team of physicians, nurses, clinicians and rehabilitation specialists.
